New Release by Mike Munson Trio
In a world of definitive statements, Mike Munson’s “Sometimes, not always.” offers subtle nuance. Joined by the incomparable rhythm team of Nick Salisbury (bass) and Lars-Erik Larson (drums) the album is rooted in the trio’s shared love of live performance.
Munson has acquired a top notch band and the surprise effect is a softer, more introspective sound. Comfortably flanked by his bandmates he is encouraged to pursue new creative avenues. With “Sometimes, not always.” Mike Munson pivots away from the driving rifts and heavy, stomping beats of earlier recordings to present slow, jazz-like instrumentals and moving ballads.
The songs were recorded live over two days at Carpet Booth Studios with all performers in the same room, no over-dubs and minimal studio manipulation. The result is clean, human and genuine and is complemented by stunning artwork by Matt Friesen.
The questions posed by this recording (What genre is this? What do these lyrics mean? Is this song sad or hopeful?) cannot be answered incorrectly. “Sometimes, not always.” leads you into the spaces between certainties and invites you to take a seat.
